I know this is a long shot, but...
Do any of the very few Ioan Gruffudd fans on my friends-list know where I can find the interview where he talks about the crazy fans who showed up at his place one night? I want to send it to a fellow fan. The interview I'm looking for is the long, descriptive one, the one where he mentions his, uh, state of dress at the time; I think it's a print interview, but it might be video. So, anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Barrie, listening to the metaphorical crickets chirp

EDITED to say that I found it: it actually was a video clip, from Craig Kilborn, in 2004. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tubh_QYZ8E

That made me laugh, sorry.

Don't be sorry! I like making people laugh. Well, usually, anyway. ;-)

Alas, was unaware of a) the interview b) the incident.

Oh, do Google it! Unless you want to wait for the answer I'm looking for. Try the keywords Ioan, Gruffudd, fans, and tea.

Found it! It's actually a vid, from when he was on Craig Kilborn a bunch of years ago. The story I was talking about starts at 6:45. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tubh_QYZ8E

Maybe you know this already, but have you checked out Following Sea? It is the place for Hornblower stuff. Somebody there might know the interview. Or at least know more than I do.

Have you read/seen the one where he and his friend got drunk on his birthday and mugged by the pregnant woman? He is a very silly man.

You think I should look on following_sea? I didn't want to unless someone suggested it, because I'm very new to the comm, and so don't really know how they feel about making fun of the actors, rather than the characters.</p>

As for the pregnant woman...God, no, I didn't, and I do know at least one or two other stories about him getting drunk on his birthday and being a genius! Perhaps he should consider celebrating dry some year?

Now I have. *sighs* Really, he and Matthew Rhys remind me so much of a pair of (male, straight) friends of mine: you really wonder how they get through the day, either alone or together!

Huh. I think I need a "Boys" icon.

It should be all right. Following Sea is a very warm place. We discuss the actors as well as the story.

Thanks for the rec. I actually did find what I was looking for, but it is nice to have other people's opinions about places I'm new to. :-)

Ah, yes, the "invited the fans in" story. The one the anti-Ioanites have started using as evidence that he is a terrible man.

I waded through 37 pages of angry ranting on IMDb, but tragically couldn't find the interview in question (it was up there at one point in time). I'm pretty sure it was a print interview, though, so you may be able to find it with some judicious googling.

And if you have the time/patience, you may be able to find it here: http://web.archive.org/web/20050315002237/http://www.ioanonline.com/articles.html

(Seems the most likely source, really, depending on when he gave the interview. This seems like the right timeframe).
MASHFanficChick: WTF? (Daniel)mashfanficchick on May 7th, 2012 02:26 am (UTC)
A terrible man? *blinks* I...am apparently missing something. Now, using it as evidence that he has the common sense of a lab table (or maybe less), or that it kind of explains the thing with him getting pulled over in LA...yeah, that makes sense. Hell, even he admits it was truly not one of the brightest things he's ever done. But terrible, at least for anyone other than him? I don't get it.</p>

And, thanks for all the suggestions. My current schedule involves large chunks of semi-free time, so I probably will check out IoanOnline...especially since I seem to recall spending quite a bit of time there when I first discovered Ioan, so I may very well have read it there.

ioaniteioanite on May 7th, 2012 03:10 am (UTC)
It's a LONG story. *deeeeep breath*

You've probably heard about the Ioan Online fiasco. This is the one where the fans insulted Alice on the message boards, Ioan asked them to stop, and they flipped out so badly that Ioan pulled funding from the site and caused it to shut down. Well, some people just Will. Not. Get over it and have made it a habit to insult his acting abilities, mental health, and general personality. They hang out on Imdb, mostly, so I don't have to deal with them, but it's not pleasant to see.

Anyway, at one point the endless ranting threw in the "fangirls on the doorstep" incident as an example of Ioan as a raging hypocrite. The girls in question wrote up a "report" of what happened when they visited, and said that Ioan was very friendly and polite with them. Then Ioan gave a public interview where he acknowledged that he'd done this, and then realized that he'd been a bit of a moron and was lucky that the girls didn't turn out to be stalkers (or some such thing; I can't remember all the details). Somehow this is construed as Ioan being an ass and being mean to the original girls. If anything, he's poking fun at *himself*.

Yeah, the anti-Ioanites are special.
MASHFanficChick: Damn (Wilson)mashfanficchick on May 7th, 2012 03:44 am (UTC)
Awww! That sucks. (Though, also, it reminds me of just why the hell I stay so far away from the imdb boards: they seem to give out signals to the crazies, especially the mean-spirited ones.) I mean, all of it's sad, and I actually have my own issues with official fan sites being pulled, but as I understand it from all the rational people I know, he had a damn good to reason to say "Ok, if you all can't play nicely, I'm taking my site and going home." To bitch about that in private, or even on a comm, that I understand, but the rest of it? No offense, because I 100% don't mean you, but suffice it to say that the sheer amount of perpetual wank I keep discovering by accident is one of the reasons I stay on the edges of the Hornblower universe.</p>

Also, having personally been in a situation with an actor making some VERY poor choices in regards to an interaction with fans (in my case, all on his own; we, the fans, wound up being the ones who eventually put a stop to it), I can say from experience that someone can be nice and sweet and charming...and still making a really poor decision. That the two women he invited in weren't actually dangerous isn't the point: the point is that he allowed people who had already shown some pretty poor understanding of boundaries further into his universe, rather than firmly but gently pushing them away. That act, regardless of it's actual consequences, was a stupid and dangerous one, and I don't have to have been in the fandom--or any fandom--longer than five minutes to be able to say that anyone who can't see that doesn't deserve to call herself a fan.

Yeah. You didn't think I could ramble on more than I do on your journal, did you? Hah.

ioaniteioanite on May 7th, 2012 05:01 am (UTC)
"suffice it to say that the sheer amount of perpetual wank I keep discovering by accident is one of the reasons I stay on the edges of the Hornblower universe."

Tell me about it. I actually wound up getting depressed at one point by the sheer amount of hatred I was seeing against Ioan. I felt like the only fangirl in a sea of negativity.

But the Hornblower fandom, or at least the one on following_sea, is generally very nice, with no wank at all. It's getting into IOAN fandom that's a touch more risky.

"anyone who can't see that doesn't deserve to call herself a fan."

That's what really pisses me off. If they didn't like the shut-down of Ioan Online and decided to have nothing more to do with Ioan, I'd understand that. But to keep harping on about it years after the event is taking things too far. And they insist that *They* were in the right here.

No worries about the rambling; you may have noticed that I do my fair share of Ioan based babbling over at my own journal.
MASHFanficChick: HEE! (RDJ)mashfanficchick on May 7th, 2012 02:35 am (UTC)
HEE! Sorry, I just have to say thanks again, because now I'm reading interviews I guess I didn't get to the first time around. Like the one with him and Matthew...yeah, anyone else reading this? Picture what I say about Josh and RK, except with less arguing and more profanity. And, apparently, occasional Welsh.
ioaniteioanite on May 7th, 2012 03:12 am (UTC)
Glad there's some good stuff there. Do let me know if that archive has the interview you were looking for; I'm curious now.

Is that the interview which includes the phrase "dancing like nutters in ladies' overcoats?" I was amused in a embarrassed sort of way by that one.
MASHFanficChick: Facepalm (Chris)mashfanficchick on May 7th, 2012 03:47 am (UTC)
So far, I haven't found it; I'm thinking I may need to stop looking on my phone, as it's giving me a headache. And, no, I don't recall that particular line. This was the one where Matthew attempted to tell an embarrassing story about himself, only to have it end with Ioan's glasses being in the toilet (of course).
ioaniteioanite on May 7th, 2012 04:53 am (UTC)
I think we *are* thinking of the same article. Do the two boys tell a story about Ioan walking out naked on the balcony at Cannes?
MASHFanficChick: Captain Jack is Amusedmashfanficchick on May 7th, 2012 05:40 am (UTC)
Well, yeah, but--just from what I've seen tonight--they both really like telling that story. I think I saw it in three different interviews of them together. That said, it's entirely possible that you're right and I just missed that line. (I seem to recall I was cackling hard enough that the tears were beginning to cloud my vision!)

Edited because I realized that I really couldn't see properly last night: the typos in this repsonse were just appalling!

Nope, I found the one I was thinking of on YouTube. It's the one from Craig Kilborn, in 2004. (Also known as one of the ones where he tells the LA cop-car story; no wonder they make me think of each other!) It's here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tubh_QYZ8E

(Also, I wonder what it says about me that the only thing really different about this interview from any of the other ones where he talks about this debacle is that in this one, he mentions the other thing he was wearing, besides his boxers: his glasses. And yet, I so clearly remembered him mentioning them that that was how I knew all the other interviews I'd seen were the "wrong" ones!)
ioaniteioanite on May 8th, 2012 09:47 am (UTC)
I'm glad you found it eventually.

Well, if this was the only time he mentioned his glasses (and I think he looks great in glasses, myself), then it made the story stand out. I'm not surprised.

Hey, during your perusal of the article archive, did you see the article where Ioan and Matthew went to a dude ranch together? I thought that one was cute.
